Townlands in Glenmore, Co. Kilkenny

St. James Catholic Church, Glenmore (2019)

Glenmore is a village as well as a Catholic parish. There is some confusion and dispute as to what townlands are found in the parish of Glenmore. Part of the confusion arises because over centuries various governmental administrative divisions were drawn and redrawn, names of areas changed, or local people referred to their area differently than written records.   There is further confusion because there is a townland near Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny called Glenmore. If records refer to Glenmore townland this record probably is not relevant to Glenmore Village or Glenmore Parish.

Rev. William Carrigan C.C. the author of the four volume set of books entitled the History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory (1905) noted that the Catholic Parish of Glenmore “formed one parochial union with Slieverue down to 1846, when it became a separate parish. Glenmore takes in the civil parishes of Ballygurrim, Kilcoan, Kilbride, Kilmakevoge, and more than half the civil parish of Kilcolumb. It’s area is 13,529 statute acres.” (Vol. IV, p. 85).
