Glenmore, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland

Excerpts: Hearth Tax 1664

DD, Notebook 5

The Hearth Money Tax Rolls 1664

The Hearth Money Tax for the Barony of Ida includes the large area of South Kilkenny mainly adjoining the River Barrow which separates it from County Wexford, and the urban District of Waterford. This tax was first introduced into England by statute in 1661 and the following year into Ireland. This new form of taxation applied to all who resided in houses in which a hearth or fireplace was situated. People living in houses who were poor and poverty stricken were exempted from this new form of taxation. Its introduction was to broaden the income of taxation from people who were not liable to property taxation in the traditional system of taxation. The new hearth taxpayers were vastly more numerous than the property taxpayers. This new tax applied to each hearth or fireplace in a house.

Glenmore did not become a parish until 1846. The list below was compiled by Danny Dowling of the areas that would 182 years later become Glenmore Parish.
