From Danny’s Photo Album
The featured photo was found in one of Danny Dowling’s photo albums. Danny was an avid photographer, and we shall feature some of his photos over the coming weeks. It is believed that this photo was taken in Glenmore. Do you recognise this location?
The Mill at Bearstown -Nickey Forristals home.
On reflection I think that the more accurate location of “The Mill” should be Graiguenakill. The bridge over the pill on the “new line” road is called the Bearstown bridge.
Yes, according to the 1901 Census, as well as Danny’s notes, the Forristal Mill was located in Graiguenakill. Bearstown, according to the old Ordinance Survey Maps, was located in Ballyverneen and there was a bridge marked on the maps called the Bearstown Bridge. It appears to have been a humpbacked bridge and was one of the bridges destroyed in Glenmore during the War of Independence. For anyone who would like to see other photos of the Mill please see our facebook page, Glenmore History, where readers have posted additional photos. Thanks to everyone for identifying the Mill and providing details, memories and additional photos.
Would this be my Great grandfathers home Patrick Forristal ? Nicky would have been his son.-I’ve never seen a picture before! Thanks for
