BALLYVERNEEN TOWNLAND

Dunphy’s Farm in Ballyverneen. (DD Notebook 7) (Interview of Patrick Forristal of Graiguenakill and Richard Dunphy of Ballyverneen on 12 March 1980)

Bárneyzgh—field at back of Dunhy’s house. Level and contains 5 statute acres. Old fever hospital of Famine period stood in this field at the lower or railway side. Field still in existence.

Fána Mána—Field situated about 300 yards up from back of Dunphy’s house. Contains about 6 statute acres. Level field. The old people used shun it, as the fairies used hurl here, and it had the reputation of not being able to get out of it at night time. Pat Dunphy got lost in it all night on one occasion. This field still in existence.

Tinnafalya—Formerly four fields owned by Patsy Walsh, but now let into two fields. Situated over the middle of the rock over River Barrow. About 8 statute acres in area.

Groffeh—Two fields still in existence, and bouncing Tinnafalya at the Ballyverneen side. Contains about 6 Irish acres.

Walsh’s Field—Situated at top of the Rock Lane. Contains about 7 statutory acres and still there.

The Clohe Ninge—Field of 8 statute acres bouncing double ditch on Jamestown side. Formerly 2 fields. Spring in this field in wet weather.

The Magazine—Long narrow strip of field alongside railway of 25 acres. Powder and explosives stored here during building of railway. Still in existence.

Séumíns Haggard—Field of 2 statute acres situated across lane from Dunphy’s haggard. Forristal’s used thresh here. This field now part of Gort na Tobair. Séumín Líam was the name of the man who owned the field in days gone by.

Gort na Tobair—Field of 3 Irish acres situated at back of Billy Forristal’s old house. Now gone and incorporated into field of about 15 acres. Well at side of lane opposite Dunphy’s.

The Big Crawns –Field of about 7 statutory acres over Main Road near the Coopers. Now gone and left into bigger field. People named Crane owned the field in days gone by.

Bearna Brún—Field  of about 6 statute acres next to Crawns but nearer to the Coopers. Now gone.

Gort na Mona—Field  of 2 statute aces over Main Road beyond Co. Road Bridge. Narrow field, and now let into bigger unit.

Gorry Vorkish—Field of 3 statute acres and situated opposite Gort na Tobair, about 100 yards up laneway. Still in existence.

Wall’s Haggard—Field of about 1 statute acre now incorporated in Gorry Vorkish. In earlier times it was called Pendy’s Haggard.

Grant’s field—Field situated on right hand side going up Rock Lane. Contains about 6 Irish acres. Formerly 2 fields, and owned by James Grant.

Poore’s Marsh—Consists of 2 statute acres and situated at side of railway. Bouncing marsh formerly owned by Irish’s, and in earlier times by Walsh’s of Carrickcloney.

  • Paul Phillips—Two fields in Haggard, belonging to Roches. One owned by Marty Roche and one owned by Jack Roche.
  • Andy’s Field—Owned by Marty Roche. Situated in Haggard on left hand side of lane going to Martin’s from M. Roche’s. A man named Andy Donovan owned this field and lived in a house in it. Donovan gave it to Mike Roche.  The field was the subject of law case.
